Sustainability is a key area of focus at the NYSE.  This focus was on display when United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon visited to commemorate NYSE Euronext joining the United Nations Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) initiative.

The SSE initiative is led by the UN and brings exchanges together to explore how they can work with investors, regulators, and companies to enhance corporate transparency on environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) issues and encourage responsible long-term approaches to investment. The afternoon started with a gathering of senior executives from NYSE-Listed companies and sustainability professionals with leaders from the United Nations, academia and non-profit organizations at the NYSE. Some good networking preceded the formal program.

Earlier this year Sanjit “Bunker” Roy, founder and director of Barefoot College, came to NYSE to speak about his work training the workers of tomorrow. His path to diversity and leadership was inspiring for the Global Diversity Leadership Exchange (GDLE), a prestigious executive forum focused on diversity and inclusion strategies to support business objectives in emerging markets. A global array of executives attended the second annual symposium  which was held Wednesday, February 6, 2013 focused on the them of "Opening New Markets."

In his inspiring keynote, Bunker Roy spoke about working from the premise that traditional knowledge and practical skills of the poor are more important than paper degrees or qualifications, and his organization has provided a path to empowerment and sustainability by training more than three million people (in 68 countries)...

I recently attended was is one of my favorite days of the year -  the annual meeting of the committee to select the recipients of our Teachers Fellowships. Every summer, NYSE Euronext teams up with the SEC, and we present four one-week long Teachers Workshops. Three of the weeks bring the teachers to NYC and the New York Stock Exchange to learn about financial markets.
