On June 18th, we celebrated the 25th Anniversary of MSCI Emerging Markets Indices on the New York Stock Exchange. The exclusive event consisted of breakfast and ringing of the Opening Bell, followed by a panel discussion. 35 high profile clients attended alongside MSCI and NYSE Liffe US. It was very exciting day so I wanted to share some highlights from this great event.

Upon arriving at 8:30am, attendees noticed the MSCI banner immediately, which generated a lot of excitement. This was the first chance for our guests to take pictures. The iPhones came out!

Inside, guests got to mingle while breakfast was served in a room on the historic 6th floor. We've been working very hard and I am proud to announce that seventy BIC trades (Block trades at Index Close) were reported to NYSE Liffe US during the month of May (through May 29), totaling $1.9 billion in notional value. With these trades, NYSE Liffe US has surpassed $20 billion in notional value of BIC trades on 786 transactions since launch in September 2011.

Year to date Average Daily Volume for mini MSCI futures listed on NYSE Liffe US stands at over 22K, up 70% Y-O-Y. Open Interest has soared to a new high of 323K as the Jun-Sep roll begins.

BIC trading provides customers the ability to manage the tracking impact of executing large orders relative to the underlying index level by explicitly tying the transaction price to the closing level of the underlying index. BIC trading has proven to be a successful tool with over $7.1B transacted in mini MSCI Emerging Markets Index futures  and $4.3B transacted in mini MSCI EAFE Index futures in 2013 to date alone....

Ten BIC trades (Block trades at Index Close) have been reported on NYSE Liffe US during the month of March, totaling $250 million in notional value. With these trades, NYSE Liffe US has surpassed $15 billion in notional value of BIC trades on 551 transactions. YTD ADV stands at 16.7K, up 106% Y-O-Y. Open Interest in the MSCI Index Futures complex reached a new high of 287,627 as the March-June roll begins.

NYSE Liffe US launched BIC trading in September 2011 as an innovative way to provide customers the ability to manage the tracking impact of executing large orders relative to the underlying index level by explicitly tying the transaction price to the closing level of the underlying index. BIC trading has proven to be a successful tool with over $3B transacted in mini MSCI Emerging Markets Index futures  and $2.9B transacted in mini MSCI EAFE Index futures in 2013 to date alone.

The September-December roll in mini MSCI Index Futures once again began earlier than prior quarters (see Pace of Roll graphs below). As of 9/13, nearly 40% of the open interest in both the mini MSCI Emerging Markets and mini MSCI EAFE contract had already rolled. A total of 124,021 mini MSCI futures contracts traded on September 13th, by far and away the most active day ever in MSCI Index-linked futures on any U.S. exchange. In mini MSCI Emerging Markets Index futures contracts alone, over 75,000 contracts traded, a new record for mini MSCI Emerging Markets.
