U.S. stocks extended recent declines as heightened concerns over the impasse in Washington continued to weigh on sentiment.   As well, investors took profits on some of the year’s best performers while awaiting the un-official start of earnings season following today’s close.  Telecomm, Technology, and Materials led names on the S&P 500 lower, while Utilities and Consumer Staples were the only major sectors to finish in positive territory.  Oil is slightly higher while Gold trades lower.   ...

U.S. equities advanced for the fourth straight session with the Dow closing 75 points higher after strong quarterly performance and positive comments from Alcoa added to investor optimism at the start of the earnings season.  Industrials and Materials led stocks higher, while Telecom lagged for a second day.  Crude Oil and Gold are both higher.  The dollar rose toward recent three-year highs against a basket of currencies, with more investors betting on further gains as the Federal Reserve prepares to reduce its stimulus program.  ...

U.S equities finished lower, giving back a large part of Thursdays rally as investors weighed weaker-than-expected consumer sentiment , a jump in producer prices, and lowered outlook from the IMF ahead of next week's Fed meeting.  Financials and Energy are led decliners, while Utilities and telecom was the only major sectors that traded higher. The dollar lost ground against the yen for a fourth straight session, extending a recent slide which has been fueled by worries that major central banks may soon start scaling back stimulus policies.  ...

Ahead of the Bell: Dow futures are trading up 47 points and S&P futures are trading up 6 points following signs of political progress in Italy.
