We’re in day three of EMC World and I’m nearing the overload stage where I can’t hear about another piece of amazing gadgetry without my head exploding.  EMC made some pretty big announcements about their various product lines but the most interesting one to me is their commitment to support competitive storage arrays behind their FAST (Fully Automated Storage Tiering) software technology.

It’s been four years since the Great Recession first hit us, and its effects are still as strong as ever.  No doubt it had many causes but the fact is that everyone got out of their debt (pun intended) - even if some benefited so much as not to care - and we still haven’t paid back all our dues. Getting to a clean slate is going to take more time but we can speed up that journey:

We need more innovation to create better ways of doing old things and amazing ways of doing new things.  In short: we need disruption!

Andrew Aitken of The Olliance Group wrote a nice blog post about the trend in Enterprise Computing for major firms to seed ad hoc open source projects that meet specific low-level computing needs.  He cites OpenMAMA as a great example of this new trend, which he thinks is the natural evolution of Open Source software to meet the needs of more industry specific use cases.

How do you make Linuz look cool? Try mixing cute animations and some amazing facts into a three minute video and post it on YouTube! That's exactly what the Linux Foundation did to show how the mission-critical, enterprise powering and ubiquitous Internet enabling operating system is developed. Check it out here.

They also posted some very good videos from the recent Linux Collaboration Summit, including one I gave about our open source initiative: OpenMAMA.

If you use middleware when developing your applications and you like open source software, then you'll definitely find this interesting.
