Ahead of the Bell: Dow futures are trading up 45 points and S&P futures are trading up 5.80 points following the second straight day of gains, world markets are higher after Japan reported its GDP for the second quarter fell just 0.3%, less than the 0.7% economists had been expecting, indicating the Japanese economy may be recovering from the earthquake faster than was expected. Markets swung higher today as the Dow closed up 3.95% and the S&P 500 closed up 4.63%, the first time ever that the Dow has seen four consecutive days of 400 or more point swings. Markets were sent higher today because of reports that yesterday’s concerning reports about the French banks were baseless, news that Italy is taking steps towards balancing the budget, and a good jobless claims report. ...

Ahead of the Bell: Dow futures are trading down 93 points and S&P futures are trading down 12 points after yesterday's selloff that drove the Dow down 4.6 percent and sent the S&P plunging 4.4 percent. Global markets have stabilized a little following a fourth day of bond buying by the ECB. The central bank has been vigorously buying Italian bonds to prevent the sovereign debt crisis from spreading to Italy and Spain. However, traders are concerned the European banking system could be faced with a financial crisis similar to the meltdown that hit Lehman and Bear Stearns in 2008. ...

The Dow fell over 600 points today following Friday night’s  announcement by S&P to downgrade the US credit rating from AAA to AA+. The Dow closed below 11,000 for the first time since October 19, continuing the historic slide that has seen the Dow lose 11% and the S&P lose 13% since the beginning of the month. ...
