In today's NYX 360 blog post, the historical tidbit was this:

"On this date in 1997, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 554.26 points, triggering circuit breakers that forced the market to close for the first time since the 1981 attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan. - NYT"

I remember that day very well.  I was in the NYSE press office at the time, and above is the photo to prove it.  The events happened late in the day and we had so many questions about what had occurred that for the sake of time we convened a press scrum on the trading floor, presided over by our president, William R. My RMCs (Relationship Management colleagues) sent a note to customers the other day that I thought was worth replaying here.  In this day when a lot of people think that all trading is commoditized and all trading venues are the same, it's important to remember that there is a difference.

An excerpt:

NYSE, NYSE Arca and NYSE Amex continued to provide superior market quality in their listed issues in August, providing tighter spreads, greater time with largest size at the best price, and large size compared to competing exchanges.

  • NYSE extended its market quality advantage during last month’s extreme volatility compared to prior months. 
  • NYSE Arca also provided the second best market quality in all three measures for NYSE-listed issues.
  • NYSE had the best size and most time at the inside more than twice as often as any other exchange in lower volume issues...

The second half of this news report lifts the curtain on the new trading posts for NYSE designated market makers. Upgraded hardware and software to make it faster and easier for people to communicate; new screens to display information more effectively and attractively.  Looks great!
