The American Heart Association Celebrates American Heart Month

On Friday, February 22 executives and key volunteers of the New York City American Heart Association will visit the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) to ring the Closing Bell, and to celebrate American Heart Month, a month-long United States observance aimed to bring awareness to the nation’s No. 1 killer—heart disease.

Both National Wear Red Day, held on the first Friday of February each year, and the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement are anchored in February as a means to underscore the battle Americans are waging against this largely preventable disease.

In 2010, the American Heart Association set a goal to improve cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent and reduce heart disease and stroke deaths 20 percent by 2020. Specifically, The Go Red For Women movement has been impacting the health of women for 10 years. As a result, more than 627,000 women have been saved from heart disease. Still though an estimated 2,150 people are dying from cardiovascular disease each day — about one death every 40 seconds.

To urge Americans to take action and protected themselves from heart disease, the American Heart Association volunteers and executives will be ringing the bell.
