Billionaire Mark Cuban Kicks Off Global Entrepreneurship Week

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), a unit of NYSE Euronext, and mtvU, the 24-hour college network of Viacom’s MTV, hosted the third “Movers & Changers” forum at the NYSE in conjunction with Global Entrepreneurship Week. To kick off the day’s events, Mark Cuban, Chairman HDNet, LLC and Owner, Dallas Mavericks; Charlie Chanaratsopon, CEO and founder of Charming Charlie; Alexandra Wilkis Wilson, Co-Founder and Chief Merchandising Officer of Gilt Groupe; and the two finalists of the “Movers and Changers” competition, rang The Opening Bell.

Bill Griffeth, co-anchor of CNBC's "Closing Bell," moderated a panel discussion with Messrs. Cuban and Chanaratsopon and Ms. Wilkis Wilson. These leading entrepreneurs discussed the fundamental points in their business plan development, as well as talk about their major influences, taking their ideas to the next level and the resources they used to achieve their dreams. The event hosted approximately 150 aspiring entrepreneurs.

At the conclusion of the forum, Messrs. Cuban and Chanaratsopon and Ms. Wilkis Wilson, along with Scott Cutler, EVP and Co-Head of U.S. Listings and Cash Equities, NYSE Euronext, will select the winner of the “Movers & Changers” competition, a nationwide search by the NYSE and mtvU to uncover the country’s next generation entrepreneurs.  The finalists of the “Movers & Changers” contest are:

  • Howard University/MyCollegeHustle.com – Edward Lyles and Alicia Glenn proposed MyCollegeHustle.com to serve as a hub for students to discover, promote and monetize their talents.
  • The University of Pennsylvania/SkillHub.com - Skillhub, proposed by Sushanth Bhaskarabhatla and Karishma Shah, would serve as a global platform for people of all backgrounds to exchange skills via webcam, with a focus on students in need of tutoring services.

Competition finalists will be featured in the mtvU “Movers & Changers” short-form series, premiering on November 21, 2011, and one team will be awarded the ultimate prize of $25,000 in start-up money.
