• Ed Sullivan (pictured), the TV host and Broadway columnist, was born on this date in 1901.  Best known for bringing The Beatles and Elvis Presley into the homes of 45-50 million viewers every Sunday night, Sullivan should also be remembered for opening the doors of fame to minority artists who otherwise would not have received national visibility.  Sullivan was the opposite of “made for television” -- neither handsome nor flashy or witty.  Yet through his hard work, perseverance and his love and respect for entertainment, he found great success, and the biggest audience in the world came to regard with great affection the awkward man with the hunched shoulders who came into their living rooms on Sunday evenings to introduce a “really big shoe” and kiss Topo Gigio good night.  Here is the well-told New York Times obituary of his remarkable life.
